  • Can my hardwood floors be refinished?
Depending on the thickness of your solid hardwood floors, most floors can be refinished multiple times throughout their life before needing to be replaced. Hardwood flooring is designed to fit together using a tongue and groove system that keeps the boards together and laying flat. If there is enough wood above this tongue and groove, your floors can likely be refinished. When it comes to engineered hardwood, the thickness of the wear layer is the biggest factor in determining if the flooring can be refinished.
  • Is it cheaper to replace my hardwood floors rather than refinish them?
Refinishing your hardwood floors is generally more cost-effective than replacing them entirely. While the cost of refinishing can vary depending on the size of the space and the condition of the floors, it is often significantly less expensive than installing new flooring. Refinishing is also an environmentally friendly choice.
  • How long would it take to refinish my hardwood floors?
The time it takes to refinish your hardwood floors depends on several factors, such as the size of the area, the type of finish you want, and the condition of the floors. Typically, the process can take anywhere from 2 to 7 days. Once the floors are finished, they take a minimum of 3 days to fully cure before you can put your furniture back in place. During this time, the floor can be open to light traffic and can be walked on with sock feet only.
  • Do I need to remove all my furniture prior to having my hardwood floors refinished?
Yes, all furniture and appliances need to be removed from all rooms that require refinishing. This can be done by moving furniture to other rooms/floors that will not be refinished. In some cases we can arrange to have a mobile storage unit delivered to the site to store your furniture while the work is being done.
  • Do the baseboards have to be removed prior to having my hardwood floors refinished?
Yes, in most cases the baseboards will need to be removed prior to sanding. Although our sanders are designed to sand right up to the baseboards, it is ideal if they are removed to avoid accidental dents and dings. Many character homes have a shoe moulding or quarter round along the bottoms of the baseboards. In these cases only the moulding would need to be removed.
  • Can I stay in my home while my hardwood floors are being refinished?
Usually the answer is yes. Depending on the scale of the refinishing project, most people are able to live in their home while the work is being performed. All furniture and appliances must be removed, so there may be some inconveniences until the floor is completely cured.
  • I pulled my carpet back and found old hardwood floors underneath. Unfortunately they look like they have a bunch of black water stains. Will these come out if I refinish my floors?
In many cases, if the stain has not penetrated too deeply into the wood, refinishing the floors can remove or significantly reduce the appearance of the stain. If there are stains that cannot be completely removed, we may recommend putting a stain on the floor which helps to camouflage anything that might be left. In cases where the hardwood is too damaged to be refinished, we can take out the damaged portion and feather in new hardwood.
  • How durable is the water-based finish going to be?
Every floor is completed using the Bona Commercial Finish System. This means you are getting industry leading stains, sealers and finishes that are designed to last. Bona water-based finishes have unsurpassed wear resistance that can handle the everyday life in your home. Different sheen levels can help minimize the appearance of scratches and dust.
  • What is the best way to clean and maintain my hardwood floors?
We always recommend the use of Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner. The residue-free solution cleans hardwood floors by gently and effectively removing dirt and grime to reveal the floor’s natural shine and beauty. Water based solutions and “Safer Choice” certification ensure a safe product for people, pets, and the planet.
